It should be clear to you by now that Gallaudet University is in crisis and fighting for its life. It should also be clear to you that Dr. Jane Fernandes is unable to build bridges and bring us to resolution.

We are alumni of Gallaudet. We support the demands of the Faculty Student Staff and Alumni Coalition (FSSA) that Jane K. Fernandes resign or be removed from office and the search process be reopened, and that there be no reprisals for protestors.

I am sending this letter in order to respectfully request your prompt intervention to support the Gallaudet students, faculty, staff, and alumni (FSSA). FSSA representatives may be contacted at http://contact.gufssa.com.

Please read below the FSSA letter, which explains the tragedy that has resulted from a flawed presidential search process. As you may know, numerous national associations support the students and the FSSA. The Board of Trustees must acknowledge these FSSA requests and accommodate them accordingly. In fact, the Gallaudet University Alumni Association issued an official letter requesting that a resolution is reached as soon as possible in order to resolve the unrest at the University, and it is yet to be posted on its website. The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) also issued an invaluable position paper supporting the students (www.nad.org/GallaudetOpenLetter3). Finally, I have included for your review the weblink to the online alumni petition, which approaches 4,400 signatures at this time (http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/654622934?ltl=1146656783).

Clearly! Intervention from your office is much needed to resolve the chaos and unrest at Gallaudet University, and this can be done by supporting the students and by asking that the Presidential process be reopened and reprisals be prohibited.

It is highly required to have this to get together and share our thoughts and insights on the current issues at Gallaudet University.

For you who live in Birmingham, Montgomery,Mobile or anywhere, I urge you to get together to find a setting that has a good lighting, seating, etc to start this gathering. If you have one, please let me know so I can post it on this blog for everyone to read and share their comments or pictures. It will be a worthwhile of your time to socialize and share their thougths....

OPEN LETTER TO GALLAUDET UNIVERSITY

Dear Dr. I. King Jordan and the Board of Trustees:

Since the appointment of Dr. Jane K. Fernandes as President-elect of Gallaudet University, the campus and indeed the Deaf community, as a whole, has been thrown into turmoil. We, the deaf community of Alabama, hereby plead with the Board of Trustees, Dr. I. King Jordan, Dr. Jane K. Fernandes, and the FSSA to come to a peaceful and lasting resolution immediately.

Since the protests started in May, there have been seven open letters from the National Association of the Deaf (NAD), open letters from the Gallaudet University Alumni Association and numerous other letters from its chapters from around the country. Countless letters from concerned individuals have also been sent. All of these letters have begged, pleaded, and even forcefully called for a resolution to this situation to no avail. To quote from one letter from the NAD, “by any definition, this is a crisis.”We are saddened and distraught at the images we are seeing on our televisions, the scathing editorials in the press, and the heart-rending stories from students on various websites. We do not want to see any further damage done to our beloved campus, and more division within our community.

We call for open and honest dialogue in these chaotic, and we daresay, these violent times.
